Conference Travel Allocations for 2017-2018

The Committee on Faculty Resources (CoFR) continues to evaluate the new system of standardized, annual Conference Travel Allocations (CTAs) adopted in 2014. In place of the earlier system (airfare for attending a conference; airfare plus $500 when presenting a paper or other formal participation), the CTA system provides a single, annual allocation for faculty participating in conferences and other meetings of professional organizations.

The system of Conference Travel Allocations (CTAs) for 2017-2018 operates as follows:

CTAs have four funding levels:

  • $400 for a fiscal year in which a faculty member is attending, but not presenting at, a conference.

  • $1000 for a fiscal year in which a faculty member is presenting a paper or participating in the formal conference proceedings (as defined below) in the continental US.

  • $1300 for a fiscal year in which a faculty member is presenting a paper or participating in the formal conference proceedings (as defined below) elsewhere in North America, Central America, or the Caribbean.

  • $1600 for a fiscal year in which a faculty member is presenting a paper or participating in the formal conference proceedings (as defined below) in any other international location.

If a faculty member did not use any conference travel funds in the preceding fiscal year and she/he is presenting a paper or participating in the formal conference proceedings, the faculty member is eligible for an additional, one-time $400 allocation.

"Participation in formal conference proceedings" is defined as activities that involve significant contribution to the conference proceedings such as paper presentation, poster presentation, panel or roundtable discussant, and/or service on conference committees or association governing boards. Roles such as timekeeper, ceremonial chair, and participant in informal gatherings are not normally included. Consult with the Chair of CoFR if you are uncertain whether your proposed conference activity qualifies as "formal participation."

Requests for Conference Travel Allocations for 2017 - 2018 should be submitted no later than March 1, 2018. Beginning in Winter term, CoFR will accept applications for requests for funding of extraordinary cases of faculty conference travel need that do not fit within the established allocations. Such cases may include opportunities for multiple conference presentations within a single fiscal year, international conferences, discipline-specific issue conferences, and the particular needs of junior faculty, if start-up funds have been exhausted. Funding for these special circumstances will be awarded on a competitive basis. To apply, use the CTA form, but ignore the automated estimate of your award.
