Knox College Commencement Ceremonies, June 8, 2002

Jonathan Fanton
"Building a stronger human rights culture is essential in the long run for defeating terrorism," said Jonathan Fanton, President of the MacArthur Foundation and Chair of Human Rights Watch, in his address to Knox College graduates on June 8. Full text

"Police, intelligence units, even armies all have a role to play in meeting particular terrorist threats.... But security measures alone will not get the job done," Fanton said. "We must combine these practical actions with affirmative steps to defend human rights, build democracy and strengthen the rule of law."

Fanton was awarded an honorary degree at Knox's 157th commencement ceremonies, held on the south lawn of Old Main.

Roger Taylor
In other remarks at the ceremony, Knox College President Roger Taylor reminded graduates that as the school year began last September, "We agreed that we would work together... on issues of tolerance and civility. In the days following Sept. 11, we kept that commitment on this campus in a manner of which we can always be proud. Now I ask you, as Knox alumni, as the newest leaders of our American democracy and our global village, to continue to work for tolerance and civility."

Graduates responded with cheers, as Taylor continued, "Our second agreement was that we would brag about our great college."

The 165-year-old liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, awarded 245 bachelor's degrees, with another 15 students participating in the ceremony who plan to complete their degrees next fall. Thirty states and 27 nations are represented in the class of 2002.

Other honorary degree recipients were Clint Grant, retired chief photographer of the Dallas Morning News; Anna Sophia Johnson and Jane Johnson, who have worked to preserve prime farmland through regulation of strip mining in Knox County; and Basilio Losada, professor of literature at the University of Barcelona.
